Walks & Day Trips
This page is for the wider outings beyond the immediate Agios Ioannis area: the longer coastal walks, the mountain routes, Kapetaniana above, Koudouma and Salamias farther along the coast, and the day trips inland if you are happy to drive.
The terrain around Agios Ioannis is exposed, dry, and often steeper than it first appears. Some routes are easy coastal walks, others are longer or more rugged, and all of them are better approached with water, shade awareness, and time to spare. The reward is space, silence, and a landscape that still feels largely untouched.
One of the most natural outings from the property follows the coast eastward in the direction of Koudouma. Along the way the route passes beaches, sea caves, and monastic landmarks, with long sea views and very little interruption.

The village above the coast changes the perspective immediately. It is worth visiting in its own right, and it is also where wider local infrastructure and activity options begin to open up.
Koudouma is one of the strongest day-trip anchors in this part of South Crete. The setting alone is striking, and it works well either as a walking objective or as a longer outing linked to the surrounding coast.
Koudoumas guideSalamias is one of the quieter coastal objectives beyond the immediate area. It works best for guests who enjoy walking into more isolated terrain rather than looking for facilities at the destination.
Salamias route guideIf you want organized outdoor infrastructure rather than independent walking only, the area above at Thalori and around Kapetaniana is the natural base for that. Horseback riding, canyoning, and guided trekking toward the mountain can be part of a wider stay if you do not mind using the mountain road as part of the day.
If you are comfortable with the road and want one day away from the coast, Messara makes sense as an inland detour. From here you can combine major archaeological places such as Phaistos and Gortyna with the newer archaeological museum and other stops in the plain.
The contrast is part of the appeal: you leave the quiet south coast for a day of history and inland scale, then return to Agios Ioannis in the evening.
Because the accommodation is self-catering and the setting is quiet, it is easy to come back from a walk, cook, rest, and head out again later. That flexibility is one of the strengths of staying here rather than in a busier coastal town.
