Where You Are

Agios Ioannis lies on the southern edge of Crete, below the mountain village of Kapetaniana and beneath Mount Kofinas, the highest peak of the Asterousia range. The final descent brings you from the mountain down to a quiet coastal settlement with broad sea views and very little around it beyond stone, scrub, coves, chapels, and old routes.

This is not a resort strip and it does not pretend to be one. People come here for the feeling of being at the end of the road, close to the sea, and far from the busier rhythms of the north coast. In practical terms, the immediate area means the village beach, Elygia, the monastery of Saint John, and the route as far as Saint Anthony's cave.

Saint Anthony's cave is the point where the immediate surroundings begin to open into a longer coastal outing. It still belongs to the local Agios Ioannis landscape, but it also hints at the larger route eastward toward Koudouma.
